Cheap building Materials for the Yard & Garden

With the economy the way it is and the task of building a gopher proof garden looming. I have started to ponder cheap and safe building materials of the preferably free type. I would love to hear any ideas on this matter, and will give a few of my own. We throw so many tings out and I am considering the use of wine bottles for small retaining walls.
